SAMPLE Toolkit

Software Assisted Music Participation for Learning and Expression (SAMPLE) is our bespoke two day course that provides accredited music therapists with in depth training and knowledge about how digital audio workstation software and sampling can enhance your practice. We believe this will add value because you will have access to a far greater range of sounds and instruments than you can physically play, meaning you can find the best instruments or “sound” for your client to maximise therapeutic benefit.

  1. Bespoke training in the use of in free digital audio workstation software and instrumental/synth sample libraries. This includes full guidance and walkthrough of the setup process and example delivery in practice.

  2. A demonstration of a variety of free and paid sample libraries from Spitfire Audio and EastWest, covering orchestral, pop, rock, jazz, world / cultural instruments, choirs / vocalists, percussion as well as electronics and synths, and show how you can play these instruments “live”!

  3. How to translate your existing knowledge of music theory into the language of music instrument digital instrument (MIDI) notation within digital audio workstation software. It’s just digital sheet music essentially! You will learn to link MIDI notation with your sample libraries to make the notes you write sound like the instrument you want.

  4. Demonstrate how and why this is inclusive from the perspective of someone with physical disabilities who is unable to play an instrument or keyboard.

  5. Demonstrate how simple features such as the ability to input notes into the computer, as well as your ability to save and return at any time allows for the potential of development and improvement over time. If clients were able to use this software, it would also enable use outside of therapeutic sessions.

  6. Discussions about how music therapy can be a useful therapeutic tool for the rare disease community.

  7. Please note, SAMPLE is not an accredited or recognised music therapy course. It is “patient led” and informed from personal lived experience of having a physical disability and a background in mental health research. Please check out our background if you want to know more.

SAMPLE Delivery

rwxMusic have a variety of ways to deliver SAMPLE. SAMPLE can be completed in a two day workshop delivered in person or online for £150pp. In person workshops will only be delivered with three or more people, and we may charge more for face to face delivery if you are outside of the South Wales area.

It is modular by design, so we can accommodate individual music therapists who may wish to learn over several shorter sessions. We charge £35 per hour and this is delivered online.

You must have a PC or laptop that runs Windows or MacOS. It is highly recommended that you have at least 8GB of RAM to ensure smooth playback of instruments and sounds. We also recommend you purchase a cheap midi-keyboard so you can “play” in a more traditional manner. You can find reviews and prices of the cheapest midi keyboards here.

Please email leon@rwxmusic.co.uk if you would like more information or would like to arrange a free 15 minute online call.
